Mepkin Poem

Returned late yesterday from four days retreat at Mepkin Abbey. It was a restful, peaceful time and I am thankful.  Saw an odd thing on the way..

On the way to Mepkin - July 30, 2018

Saw a man today
Walking the side of the road.
Wrapped round with snakes
Two...maybe more.
Languorous on his neck and shoulders
Brown, banded and speckled, shimmering copper boas
Festooned - his arms orans
Displaying as if for sale.
Get your hot snakes right here.
Or was that mute supplication
The boas having had enough
Of cars, broiling asphalt and noise
And smelling Tailrace - flowing and deep,
Breathing and green
Just seconds away.
